W-A-T-E-R

(Subtitled "You can call me Flower" - from Bambi)

It's been a busy week at our house - where we celebrated today owning our beautiful Carbondale home for just over a month. Calla's continuing to add words to her vocabulary, although "more" and "alldone" still remain her favorites. Today's word is "flower," pronounced more like "flowww" but definitely referring to the roses on our table from our garden (just realized we have a rose bush last week) and the cut flowers still looking nice from the bouquet sent by the Richards fam. It seems that each day brings some kind of Helen Keller/ Miracle Worker moment where a word and its meaning just seem to click. Sometimes it's a word that Joe and I are working on with her, and sometimes it's something that just seems to make sense to Calla. Frankly, I wouldn't have picked "flower" for our next word; "Mom, my diaper is wet and needs to be changed. Would you mind?" would really be more helpful for me.

We're picking up branches from our Ike-inspired wind storm Sunday morning. Nothing like the rain our friends in Chicago experienced last weekend, but we did get some heavy gusts. One brought down a huge branch in our little Cypress grove, splitting off the top of another Cypress on the way down. That tree top is now precariously balanced in a crook of a third tree and it's not clear how stable it is. Looks like it's going to stay perched, but there's always a chance a bird might land and throw everything off. Needless to say, we don't play back there much these days.

We've started to hang pictures and get in a groove here. In the afternoon, Calla and I walk the mile to the park and then swing and slide and generally stare at the big kids running around. It's better exercise than a gym membership. And just now with Calla in bed, we're finishing the day's crossword puzzle and Joe just skunked me in cribbage. So, I think things are getting back to normal.

On a sadder note, we're closing down the pool on Friday. I had a lovely pool moment last Saturday - Calla and I had walked to and from the farmer's market (about 1.5 miles, hot and humid). She, of course, fell asleep in the stroller just as we were walking up to the house, even though we had more errands to run. But I ignored them for a while, munched on a Honey Crisp apple (my favorite - and the very last basket of them at the market!) and splashed my feet in the pool doing a crossword puzzle. Calla woke up just when she needed to so that we could get our day back on track.

We were given a "Welcome to Carbondale" gift from Joe's Department Chair and his family. Included was a new outfit for Calla. I'm not sure she gets it - but it really does look cute! Maybe her next word will be "Saluki!"
