Growing Season

Have I mentioned I love summer?

Grapes are bulging in our front walkway.  Zucchini are growing inches each day.  Green beans are showing themselves and - even with the tomato-cide we experienced this spring - green tomatoes are everywhere in the garden.  We're still a little sad about losing our baby bluebirds, but the house finches who nested in our hanging begonias on the back porch now have a family of three little ones to feed.  We spent about 8 hours in the pool this weekend, and Calla is sporting beautiful tan lines (I'm jealous) and Corrie is well on her way to being a water baby (alas, she has my skin tone, but I'm happy to say she isn't sun burned, so that's something).

And yet.

And yet, as a reminder that summer doesn't last forever, that babies - finch or human - grow up and eventually leave the nest, I'm a little sad to report that strawberry season is officially over in So Ill.  Like sands through an hourglass, we've now moved into blueberry season, which is good.  Just not strawberry good.

Thankfully, I have about 8 pints of strawberries frozen, and another 8 half-pints of frozen strawberry puree.  So, we'll be OK.

Calla helped make the strawberry shortcake and helped eat it, too.

And then there's always peach season coming up.

Pics of our baby finches to follow when Mama leaves the nest next.
